Professor C.K. Poon, President of the PolyU and other senior staff members are in strong support of developing research activities in this area. Big research grants were awarded from:
- PolyU President's Endowment Account on Fire Safety in Atrium Buildings;
- PolyU Area of Strategic Development (ASD) in Construction: Engineering Performance-Based Fire Codes project under the Construction Industry Development Studies and Research Centre (CIDARC);
- PolyU Area of Strategic Development (ASD): Fire Safety Engineering Contingency project, Advanced Buildings Technology in a Dense Urban Environment (ABTDUE);
- PolyU funding through Budget & Resources Committee on 'Fire Safety Engineering' with a target to establish a joint National Engineering Research Centre in Thermal Safety (NERCTS) with the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC).
