Brief
Dr. Then joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in October 2001 as an Associate Professor, Facility Management, Maintenance and Operations, in the Department of Building Services Engineering. He is the programme leader of the Graduate Programme in Facility Management. His main responsibilities are research, course development and teaching associated with the postgraduate programme in Facility Management. Dr. Then is a Council Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Facility Management (HKIFM) and is the current Director of Research.

Before coming to Hong Kong, Dr. Then was Associate Professor in Strategic Asset Management at the School of Construction Management and Property, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. The Chair in Asset Management was sponsored by the Queensland Government Department of Public Works, with predominantly a research and advisory role on development and implementation of best practice in strategic asset management and facilities management in the public sector. During the 5-year fixed term appointment(1997-2001), Dr. Then also introduced, coordinated and lectured on a new graduate programme in Facilities Management. The graduate programme in Facilities Management was one of the first inter-faculty programmes, jointly provided by the Brisbane Graduate Business School and the School of Construction Management and Property.

While in the UK (1979 –1997), Dr. Then was a lecturer in the Department of Building Engineering and Surveying, Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. He developed the highly successful postgraduate programs in Facilities Management and Asset Maintenance and for a period, was Director of postgraduate studies.

Dr. Then was the Coordinator of CIBW70 from 1998 to 2000. CIB is the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction. Since 2002, Dr. Then is the joint CIB Coordinator of CIBW70 and hosted the 2004 CIBW70 Symposium in Hong Kong in 2004.
Dr. Then has published and presented more than 60 papers internationally and is co-author of a Butterworth-Heinemann, (UK) publication: Facilities Management and the Business of Space (ISBN: 0-340-71964-8). He is on the editorial board of the following journals: Facilities Management Journal, (2000-2004); International Journal of Strategic Property Management, (2004 to date). Dr. Then has consulted in various areas of built assets management and facilities management while in UK and latterly, in Brisbane and Singapore.
