Conference Attendance - Advances in Wind and Structures and SFPE Taiwan Chapter Establishment Ceremony

May 2008

Professor W.K. Chow attended the Advances in Wind and Structures (AWAS'08) at Jejudo, Korea and the establishment ceremony of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) - Taiwan Chapter from 28 May to 1 June 2008. The trip to Taipei was fully supported by the SFPE-Taiwan Chapter with the Founding President Shen-wen Chien being an academic staff of the Central Police University at Taiwan. Professor Chow himself is also the Founding President of the SFPE-Hong Kong Chapter since 2002.

Professor Chow presented a paper on studying possible wind effects on skybridges at height at AWAS'08 on 29 May, 2008 at Jejudo, Korea. Results were compiled from an RGC funded project on the new concept on linking up tall buildings through skybridges at height for quicker evacuation in very tall buildings, working in collaboration with Mr Antony Wood at the University of Nottingham and Illinois Institute of Technology. There is great potential in applying for building clusters in high density cities. Computational Fluid Dynamics should be applied to study wind loading on structural stability and wind-induced vibration for those architectural features. He was also invited to chair a session on wind loads on structural systems.

AWAS’08 at Jejudo

AWAS'08 aimed at bringing up engineers and researchers to share experience on wind engineering. That was co-chaired by Academician Chang-Koon Choi and Dr John Holmes. Over 200 experts from USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, China Mainland, Taiwan, UK, Denmark, Malaysia and Hong Kong attended. Welcome address was presented by Academician Choi, and remarks by Professor Kenny Kwok, a world famous expert in wind engineering, and Professor Y. Tamura, Chairman of the International Wind Engineering Association.

Professor Chow then rushed to Taipei, attending the SFPE Taiwan Chapter Establishment Ceremony on 31 May, 2008. Dr D.D. Evans, Director of SFPE Headquarter, Professor A. Sekizawa, Board Member of SFPE and Professor in Fire Science and Engineering at University of Tokyo, and Professor Fitzgerald at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA, attended as well. The ceremony was chaired by Commissioner of the Taipei City Fire Department, Professor Kuang-hua Hsiung who is also an academic staff of the Central Police University.
