Presentation of Hong Kong Case Study in the SFPE 7th International Conference of Performance-based Codes and Fire Safety Design Methods in New Zealand

Another significant international contribution to the development of performance-based fire safety design was realized through the successful presentation of Hong Kong Case Study in the SFPE 7th International Conference of Performance-based Codes and Fire Safety Design Methods held in Auckland, New Zealand from 16 to 18 April 2008. 

 

Professor W.K. Chow from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, President of Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) - Hong Kong Chapter and Fiona Tsui from Maunsell AECOM Fire Engineering Group, Secretary of SFPE-Hong Kong Chapter were the speakers for the invited Case Study on the assigned topic “High Rise Apartment Building with Single Means of Escape and Open Kitchen” to illustrate the practice in Hong Kong covering perspectives of authority acceptance, consulting engineers and engineering research.

There were a total of 7 invited case studies by different research institutes, universities or engineering consulting companies from New Zealand, Hong Kong, Sweden, Australia, USA, Japan and UK.  Hong Kong was invited to undertake the case study for both the 6th and 7th SFPE conferences, which were led by Professor Chow. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers is a globally well-recognised learned society in advancing the fire engineering technological development in every aspect of research, guidebooks, professions, etc.  The fire engineering community in Hong Kong is proud that Hong Kong was invited to be one of the geographical areas over the world to undertake the case study.

The 45-minute presentation was very well received by over 200 audiences including professional engineers, policy makers, researchers and educators from renowned fire engineering organisations such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA, which ended with an active and constructive question and answer session.
