Programme Aims

This programme provides an opportunity of further education by part-time study for building services technicians and practitioners, and engineering graduates who plan for a career in the building services trade, to upgrade their academic qualifications and technical skills to the professional engineer level.

Similar to the full-time programme leading to the same award, it satisfies the need for trained professional building services engineers. Ultimately, graduates will contribute to the development of the building services industry in Hong Kong and elsewhere.

Characteristics

In addition to lectures, tutorials and laboratory experiments, you will be required to complete two major projects -a research project and a group design project. The research project will be on a topic relating to your workplace or the Department's research interests. The design project is based on a building development for which you will act as the building services engineer, giving professional advice to the architect and the client.

Professional Recognition

This award satisfies the academic requirements for Corporate Membership of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

Programme Structure

You will normally attend classes on two evenings plus Saturday, for an average nine hours each week.

• You will enter the programme at an intermediate level equivalent to stage 2 of a similar 3-year full-time programme leading to the same award.

• You will begin with studies of Mathematics, English and building services systems.

• Year Two provides enhanced knowledge of building services systems, with emphasis on analysis and design of systems.

• Years Three and Four are equivalent to the final year of the full-time programme leading to the same award, and introduce more advanced aspects of building services engineering through specialized electives and projects.

• In Year Three, you will work on a design project, through which you will demonstrate your ability to integrate the designs of various building services systems with a building.

• In Year Four, through a research project, you will develop your ability to critically analyze building services engineering problems.

• Higher Diploma or Associate Degree in Building Services Engineering

Merit will be given to applicants with work experience in building services engineering.
